A Note from Ms. Rached

On Friday, our Equity Committee organized a papel picado activity to celebrate Hispanic Heritage month. Papel picado is a traditional Mexican decorative craft made by cutting elaborate designs into sheets of tissue paper. Papel picado is considered a Mexican folk art. In early Mexico, Aztec people chiseled spirit figures into bark. Aztecs used mulberry and fig tree bark to make a rough paper called amate. This custom evolved later into the art form now known as papel picado.

During their lunch period, students came to the crafting table and cut out tissue-paper designs. The end results was quite stunning, and is hanging in the first-floor hallway. A huge thank you to Ms. Cristina and our army of parent volunteers for making this such a special and fun way to celebrate the month!
