Kathryn's letter to the community

Dear P.S.154 Staff, Families and Students,

My name is Kathryn Fitzgerald and it is with great joy that I join the P.S.154 community. I look forward to collaborating with our talented staff, caring parents, and curious students to build upon the strong foundation already in place and to continue the tradition of courageousness at P.S.154.

Over the next few months my focus will be on listening and learning. I look forward to sharing my story with all of you, as well as hearing the many perspectives that narrate the story of P.S.154. Together we will write the next chapter for our community.

As an educator and community leader, I believe strongly that we all learn best in the context of trusting relationships. Many of the trusting relationships that have supported me in developing into the leader I am today have their roots in Windsor Terrace. I look forward to forming relationships with all of you in the days to come. It is through these relationships that I will expand my leadership abilities as I take on the role of Principal and learn how to best serve the P.S.154 community.

I am very fortunate to have had Leila as a trusted colleague through Algebra for All and the Bank Street Math Leadership Program. During my long standing relationship with Leila, I have had a small window into what makes P.S.154 special. I am truly honored to continue the amazing work you have all started under her leadership.

As Assistant Principal of P.S. 39, I saw first hand the power of a community school. From the feelings of belonging and care students experience when every staff member knows their name, to the impact of collaboration between educators who know each other deeply, to the trust and support families are able to give and receive as neighbors. The community school effect impacts student growth and achievement, along with teacher retention and development. I am excited to continue to cultivate the community school power at P.S. 154.

I look forward to meeting as many community members as I can over the last few days of summer vacation. I will be sharing a sign up for meet and greet time slots next week, please be sure to join if you are able. I would also love to hear from you all as I begin to prepare for this school year. Please share your thoughts and questions using this form

Wishing you a restful end to summer vacation!

Sincerely,

Kathryn Fitzgerald
