A Note from Ms. Rached

Thank you so much to all of our families for supporting our Staff Appreciation Week and helping to show our team how much they are appreciated!

Our first Field Day this week was a success - thank you so much to our families for volunteering, cheering, and picnicking with us!

We have so many fun and exciting events on the horizon - details are always included on the events page - so you can always check there for details.

Last month, to celebrate Arab-American Heritage Month, I led Zoom assemblies for students, and highlighted some of important accomplishments and contributions of Arab-Americans. During this Zoom, students learned that the Arabic language is what unites the Arab world, and they learned about how Arabic has its own alphabet and goes from right to left across the page, and they made may connections to other languages which have their own alphabets, some connected to their own cultures, and some that they see around them. How wonderful to get to live in a city with such linguistic diversity, in we can hear so many languages and see so many different alphabets in our everyday lives!

To celebrate Asian-American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, students will be joining Zoom assemblies with Mr. Buckley, to learn about Asian-American and Pacific Islander heritage and celebrate the accomplishments and contributions of Asian-American and Pacific Islanders. Our book of the Month this month is The Name Jar by Yangsook Choi.

To celebrate Jewish-American Heritage Month (also in May), and learn about the accomplishments and contributions of notable Jewish-Americans, all students have been invited to contribute artwork to a single-issue school newspaper. The deadline for this has been moved to Tuesday, May 28. In addition, as an extension of Jewish-American Heritage Month, the fifth grade classes will be taking a trip t the Jewish-American Heritage Museum in early June to view the โ€œThe Courage to Actโ€ exhibition.

Help Us Grow: Join the Generations Fundraising Campaign at PS 154

Calling all Tias, Nonnas, Grampies, Opas, Aunties, Zaydes, Chachas, Granddads and Mimis โ€“ PS 154 needs your help! In April, the PTA will bring back our Generations fundraising campaign. Our goal is to help expand our โ€œvillageโ€ (and fundraising pie!) by inviting all those important people who love our kids to support our school. The best part? You don't even have to be the one to ask.

At Noon on Sunday, May 19th (nestled between the science fair and chess tournament), your childโ€™s extended family membersโ€”from grandparents and cousins to aunts and uncles and close family friendsโ€”are invited to a Dessert Reception at PS 154, a chance for the kids to show their loved ones what they create and where they spend their days.

If you think your extended family would like to hear more about whatโ€™s going on at PS154 or where their important donations go, please fill out this form.

๐Ÿ“š Book Market - Call for Graphic Novels & Chapter Books! ๐Ÿ“š ๐Ÿ“ข ๐Ÿ“•

We are accepting graphic novel and chapter book donations (for all ages). Please bring your gently used books and drop them into the blue bins labeled โ€œBook Market Donation Binsโ€ on the stage in the MMR.

Do not donate other book types for the time being - other book genres will be donated externally immediately as we do not have capacity to take them.

Feel free to send back any graphic novels or chapter books previously sourced from the Book Market as well (if your child is ready to part with them!).
