Camp Koko It’s summertime year-round in this workshop, specifically designed for kids in grades Kindergarten and 1st grade! In Camp KoKo, kids engage in hands-on material exploration and building activities. Using recycled and found objects as inspiration, our Teaching Artists bring in project themes that work with kids imagination and allow them to to build based on their own creative interpretations.
Extraordinary Machines Based on knowledge of the six simple machines, students take tinkering and experimentation to the next level, combining simple machines to build more complex projects. Students are presented with challenges and then work together to design inventions that solve real-life problems. For example, they may combine pulleys, levers and cranks to construct a crane that moves heavy materials with ease.
Toy Making Kids are naturally curious and creative. Toy making taps into that intuitive imagination to help little ones give form to their ideas. Kids begin to experiment with looking at how things work by repurposing toys and pieces of toys to create new ones. Toy making also lends itself to telling stories and creating environments or context for what the kids create. Based on a theme introduced by the KoKo teaching artist, kids will use recyclables to create a “home” or imaginary land for their inventions. This class is ever-evolving and based on the ideas and interests of the student.
Wearable Machines In this workshop kids will get creative, cutting apart repurposed clothes and fabrics and combining them with recyclables to design wearable inventions. A variety of construction methods will be used in this creative reuse workshop including gluing, taping, and sewing. Koko teaching artists will introduce a “theme of the day” and the kids will use recycled materials and textiles to build inventions that they can wear based on their creative interpretation of the theme.
Instructor Koko Open Source Gallery is a Brooklyn-based organization that brings imaginative programming to children so they can explore the intersection of tech, art, and environment.
