Make a Musical, Once Upon a Time Join Child’s Play and go “Into the Woods” to reverse the curse of an enchantress, and connect the dots of our fairy tales through song and dance. Singing songs as Cinderella, Jack, and Little Red, we’ll work together to climb beanstalks, wear glass slippers to a ball, and adventure to grandmother’s house. Through improvisation and creative movement, students flex their imaginative muscles. We then layer on theater technique: they'll learn the basics of vocal warm-ups, character development, singing and choreography from our expert teachers. The unique blend of play and performance is realized in a final “sharing” for friends and family. Students get to showcase their abilities as young storytellers, singers and dancers!

Instructor Jocelyn Greene founded Child’s Play NY in 2009 as a way to transform theater education in her community.  She drew from her work as a student (MFA, NYU Graduate Acting, BA, Wesleyan University), an actor (The Public Theater, NYSF), and a teacher (Will Power to Youth, Oddfellows Playhouse, Epic Theater) to develop the rigorous curriculum and imagination-based games that ignite the program today. Child's Play staff is made up of professional working actors and musicians with a deep commitment to working with young people.

Intro class  Photography is the art of capturing light and telling stories. It is a great
way for kids to tap into their imaginations and get creative. In this introductory class, students will learn all about the camera, the different styles of photography, shutter speed, aperture (F-stop) and ISO, the 3 essentials of photography. We will explore our beautiful Brooklyn neighborhood through the lens and apply all the cool techniques they can use to create dynamic images. Then, students will learn the post production process (editing), choose their favorite image to print, and frame it to take home. New and repeat students welcome.

Advanced Studio class In this follow up to Intro to Digital Photography, Digital Photography Studio will expand on the basic techniques and photographic ideas to create amazing images. Students will explore various themes to create narratives through visual presentation and expand on composition and perspective. New and repeat students welcome. 3rd graders who completed the Intro class in the fall may register for the Advanced section in the winter. This studio class is 90 minutes and dismisses at 4:45pm.

DSLR cameras (digital single lens reflex) are provided to the students for use during both of these classes.

Instructor  Kristen Markoplis is a professional photographer and author of the photobook "Water Towers New York City Style". She is a PS 154 alumni parent. When not taking pictures, she loves to teach art and digital photography to children.

Descriptions

Simple Machines Take a trip back in time to explore a world without technology. How did life work without the simple machines we take for granted like the wheel-and-axel and the screw? In Inventor’s Lab I: Simple Machines, kids learn the history and mechanics of six simple machines (inclined plane, wedge, lever, wheel-and-axle, screw, pulley). Through tinkering and material exploration, kids learn the creative and real-life application of simple machines, opening up endless opportunities for inventive thinking and building. Past students have constructed catapults, cranes and wheeled vehicles.

Extraordinary Machines Based on knowledge of the six simple machines, students take tinkering and experimentation to the next level, combining simple machines to build more complex projects. Students are presented with challenges and then work together to design inventions that solve real-life problems. For example, they may combine pulleys, levers and cranks to construct a crane that moves heavy materials with ease.

REGISTRATION NOTE:
In order to give as many children as possible the opportunity to participate, children on the fall waitlist and students who did not take this class in the fall will be given priority registration for the winter session. Please, no repeat students from the fall session. You may add your child to the waitlist if the class is full.
Description
Kids are naturally curious and creative. Toy making taps into that intuitive imagination to help little ones give form to their ideas. Kids begin to experiment with looking at how things work by repurposing toys and pieces of toys to create new ones. Toy making also lends itself to telling stories and creating environments or context for what the kids create. Based on a theme introduced by the KoKo teaching artist, kids will use recyclables to create a “home” or imaginary land for their inventions. This class is ever-evolving and based on the ideas and interests of the student.

Podcasting: Stories and Sounds Kids will learn the fundamentals of audio production to create narrative-based and musical audio pieces. They will learn about storytelling and interviewing techniques. Using simple software, they will record their own stories then bring them to life by capturing the “wild sounds” that exist all around us in NYC!

Instructor Koko Open Source Gallery is a Brooklyn-based organization that brings imaginative programming to children so they can explore the intersection of tech, art, and environment.

Description Aequora is an outreach program of the Paideia Institute, a non-profit organization that promotes the study of the classical humanities. The Aequora program is based on a custom 4th-8th grade curriculum focusing on literacy education via Latin. The curriculum is taught by volunteers during after school hours. Through Aequora, young students can develop their English Language Arts skills and acquire strategies for vocabulary, reading comprehension, and spelling, all the while playing games and having fun with peers. About 60% of English vocabulary comes from Latin, and research shows that students who are exposed to Latin score higher on standardized tests and have improved literacy outcomes.

Instructor Sidra Lazarre is a high school junior currently attending Hunter College High School, and a P.S.154 alumna. She’s currently taking her fourth year of Latin, and has found studying the language to be an enriching and worthwhile experience; both for its applications in understanding English vocabulary and grammar and for the other benefits of learning a new language. She loves Latin and is very excited to share her knowledge of Ancient Rome’s culture and language with 4th and 5th grade students.

Description Every Mindful Sports class combines fun, focus, and resilience! In Sportopia classes, coaches will introduce a variety of indoor and outdoor ball sports over the course of the 12-week session. For younger children, the focus will be on basic skills and rules of play while kids strengthen both mind and body. For the advanced class, kids will scrimage more and learn finer points of the games. In each class, age-appropriate mindfulness practices are integrated into play, helping children learn important self-regulation strategies to prepare them for challenges on and off the field. Mindful breathing, body awareness, and kindness exercises are taught alongside the sports to create a fun and developmentally valuable experience.

NOTE: Classes will take place in the school yard weather permitting and in the cafeteria during cold or inclement weather.

Instructor Sam Faeder, the founder of Mindful Sports, grew up playing baseball in New York City and went on to play pro ball in Europe. He’s coached children locally (at a summer camp for the New York Yankees) and abroad for the European Little League World Series. Sam holds an MA in Psychology and a PhD from Columbia University, researching how mindfulness practice affects stress perception in preadolescent children playing competitive sports.

Descriptions Students will walk with PS 154 staff to the beautiful YogaSole studio for these classes.

In Yoga and Crafts K - 2nd graders will be guided through yoga and mindfulness followed by a variety of yoga and nature inspired crafts. In each yoga session, students will learn traditional yoga poses as well as yoga and meditation songs and chants. They will then have time to work on a small craft project designed to reinforce the concepts of mindfulness and connection to the natural world. Please register your child for the correct grade level in JackRabbit.

In Yoga and Journaling 3 - 4 graders will explore the physical and mental aspects of yoga as well as a little about the ancient history of yoga. Through breathing techniques, movement, and guided meditations we will build a greater understanding of yoga in the modern world and as a tool for personal health. After the movement portion of each class, students will be given time to draw and/or write with open-ended prompts in their mindfulness journals (provided) as well as work on a group art project. In each session, students will learn traditional poses as well as age-appropriate meditation songs and chants.

Instructor  Sunee LaClaire is a lifelong educator with a MS Degree from Bank Street College in Early Childhood Education. She has over two decades of teaching experience in many educational environments in New York, California, and China. Description Yoga and Poetry with Ms. Deb contains all the main ingredients of yoga — breath awareness, mind-body fitness, and a chance to experience the "self-within". This class will offer children an opportunity to create imaginative poems based on postures drawn from the natural world that they'll learn through active play. Every class will include time to rest and sing. This class will take place at PS 154 and is limited to 1st & 2nd grade students. New and repeat students welcome!

Instructor Deborah Clapp is a PS 154 After School instructor and a published poet. She is also certified through Kundalini Yoga Radiant Child program and has taught yoga through the after school programs at The Greenwich School and at Harlem Children's Zone.
