Description If your child enjoyed the Toy Making club or was interested in giving it a try, they’ll love Building & Books! Each week, children will be inspired to make their own inventions based on stories from their favorite (and newly introduced) books. Each session will begin with a different age-appropriate read-aloud to spark the imagination and prime the pump. The Koko Teaching Artists will then pose a design challenge question about a theme from the story. Kids will use their imaginations plus recyclable materials to create and build individual inventions that further explore their ideas.
Instructor Koko NYC is a South Slope, Brooklyn-based organization that brings imaginative programming to children in 25 schools throughout New York City. By using real tools and recycled materials in sustainability focused programs, children in Koko classes explore the intersection of tech, art, and environment. Description Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian art form that fuses dance, music, self-defense and acrobatics. It is an energetic and joyful experience that exposes children to new language, music, movement, and culture. Children will be exposed to traditional rhythm and songs that guide their movements — many taken from the animal kingdom. They will learn new words in Portuguese as they progress. Each week, children will have opportunities to enter the “jogo” in which two Capoeiristas play together simultaneously in a ritualized, non-violent game of movement set to rhythm. Capoeira creates a space where children can be playful, animated, graceful, and expressive in a safe, fun, and disciplined environment. New and repeat students welcome!
Instructor Mestre Foca is a native of Brazil, certified martial arts instructor, founder of Capoeira Brooklyn, and a PS 154 alumni parent. His unique and creative approach to instruction encourages discipline, focus, and respect while immersing children in Brazilian music, language, and culture.

NEW DAYS, TIMES, AND CLASSES AVAILABLE!
NOTE: Priority registration will be given to children on the winter waitlists.
Description PS 154 is one of the luckiest After School programs around with our long-standing and robust ceramics program! In these classes, even the youngest ceramicists are able to hand build and glaze personal creations each week. As children progress, Aoife and her assistants from Park Slope Pottery introduce new techniques so children can retake the class and progress at their own speed throughout the school year. New students and younger children can start in our Wednesday handbuilding classes to learn the basics. Older children and those with previous ceramics experience who would like to take their pottery practice further are encouraged to enroll for our Wheelwork classes on Thursdays. For the spring session, we’ve added an Advanced Wheelwork for children who are ready to tackle more challenging projects on the wheel.
Instructor Aoife Pacheco is a teaching artist specializing in craft education. She holds a BA in Sculpture from Oberlin College and an MA in Elementary Education from CUNY Brooklyn College. Since 2008, Aoife has run Park Slope Pottery, a clay and craft studio which seeks to help communities bond through meaningful craft-based experiences.

Description In this multidisciplinary class, children will write, illustrate, and cook a new delicious, healthy recipe each week. They will learn kitchen skills, food science, cooking safety, recipe writing, and still-life drawing. Children will form a deep connection to the food they work with by delving into where plant-based ingredients come from, how and where food grows, and how different ingredients interact in the cooking and baking process. Time to write up the recipe and draw the ingredients will also be part of each class. By the end of the session, each child will have created an original illustrated cookbook with the recipes they cooked each week.

Photography is the art of capturing light and telling stories. It is a great way for kids to tap into their imaginations and get creative. In these introductory classes, students will learn about different styles of photography, light and shade, the rule of thirds, and the 3 essentials of photography. On nice days, the class might explore our beautiful Brooklyn neighborhood through the lens. On cold weather days, the classes will stay inside to work on still life and portraits. Students will learn editing techniques, choose their favorite image to print, and frame it to take home. Since there are always new things to photograph, new and repeat students are welcome.
All children will learn on After School provided iPads. Children are also welcome to bring smart phones or personal digital cameras for use in the class. All smart phones will need to be turned off and stowed in backpacks during the school day and used in Airplane mode during class.

NEW CLASS FOR THE SPRING SESSION
Description In this new class, children will learn the basics of cinematic storytelling through hands-on exploration. They will begin with developing an understanding of the elements necessary to create a compelling narrative (character development, plot structure, and conflict) then translate those ideas into a shared storyboard and script. From there, students will work cooperatively as they create an original short film, developing new skills as actors, camera operators, lighting designers, and production assistants along the way.
Instructor Colin Jakubcyzk holds a BFA in Film and Television from New York University. He is a professional photographer and videographer who has worked on everything from weddings to comedy TV shows. In addition, he teaches photography and filmmaking to elementary and middle school children through The Shadowbox Theatre.

NEW SPRING CLASSES!
Description In these two clubs, PS 154 children will commune with nature! In our K - 1 Gardening & Pollinators club, children will learn about the butterflies and bees that keep our gardens and parks blooming while helping to tend to the PS 154 garden as it wakes up from its long winter nap and transforms into our own flower and vegetable oasis. Children will engage in fun, hands-on projects and crafts to reinforce their understanding of the natural world in the midst of our cityscape.
In our Gardening & Prospect Park Exploration club, older children will use both the garden and Prospect Park for engaging projects based on the flora and fauna all around us. In addition to germinating and planting seeds that they will tend throughout the spring, children will design and make garden markers and vertical garden pods for the school fence. They will also learn how we can be good stewards for the birds and insects who share our space by creating nest material dispensers and bug hotels. Crafts projects will include things like sun prints, plant dyes, bird houses, and herbal teas.
Instructor Jennifer Hopkins is an avid gardener and the founding director of A Playdate Everyday. She is a PS 154 alumni parent and has over 30 years of experience in early childhood education.

Description Children at the PS 154 After School have the unique opportunity to join our weekly band program for the full school year. Alumni of our program have gone on to study music at some of NYC’s eminent music programs such as Mark Twain Middle School, New Voices Middle School, Laguardia Performing Arts High School, Frank Sinatra School of the Arts High School.
The After School Band is made up of two sections — brass and woodwinds. Beginning Band will now also include a percussion section. Brass includes instruments such as trombone, trumpet, and French horn. Woodwinds include instruments such as alto saxophone, clarinet, and flute. Percussionists will start on snare drums. On the first day of beginning band, the instructors give a demonstration of all the available instruments. Each student writes down their first and second choices. From there, Travis and Matt do their best to divide the numbers evenly between brass and woodwinds and give everyone one of their top two choices. Students who are already playing a brass or woodwind instrument may also bring their own instrument to the program.
Registration is for the entire year. The fee for the full year is updated to $2200, billed in installments, plus a one-time $45 rental fee for any child who uses a PS 154 instrument. Please note the cost of repairing damage or loss to the instrument while in the care of the student is the responsibility of the student’s family. Registrants must participate in both days of band rehearsals to join the program. Students may drop band at any session break and fees will be adjusted accordingly.

She worked in textile and fashion design before becoming a costume designer for theater and film. In 2019 she transitioned to teaching yoga and movement at YogaSole.
Yoga and Crafts Children will be guided through yoga and mindfulness followed by a variety of yoga and nature inspired crafts.
