  • 1836: The Battle of the Alamo took place during the Texas Revolution. The Mexican army captured the fort after a 13-day siege. 

  • 1857: The Supreme Court ruled in the Dred Scott v. Sandford case that Black people were not citizens. This decision brought the US closer to the Civil War. 

  • 1896: Charles Brady King, a mechanical engineer, drove the first motor car in Detroit, Michigan. The car was called the "Horseless Carriage". 

  • 1940: The first telecast from an airplane in the US took place in New York City. 

  • 1973: The Supreme Court issued the Roe v. Wade decision. 

  • 1981: American hostages were released from Iran after being held for 444 days. 

  • 2010: Kathryn Bigelow became the first woman to win the Academy Award for Best Director for The Hurt Locker (2008). 

  • 2020: The first case of COVID-19 in the US was confirmed.
