Music Assembly at PS 154

Friday, November 13th was our first school assembly of the year! We welcomed Artists by Any Other Name, an arts collective, to PS 154. Every child in the school got to see the performance, sitting with their “buddy classes” from other grades.

Brought to us by Ms. Hannah Barnard of our after school program, Artists by Any Other Name interprets classical music in a contemporary and engaging way. Our children were able to meet a string quartet, a trio of dancers, a pianist, and a classical vocalist. The group performed pieces from their original production of Danse Macabre in front of a video of illustrations composed by yet another collective member. To read and see more about this production, check out a blog posting about it.

Our children are already familiar with the concept of Danse Macabre from our PTA-funded music class with Ms. Gabel. They acted out their own versions in the classroom in prior weeks. Today, they got to see professional musicians and dancers perform an interpretation as well!

Our children were a respectful, engaged audience. To hear what they thought of the performance and what they learned, you can ask them:
What is an arts collective? What do the group do?
What is a danse macabre?
Was the music happy or sad, exciting or calm?
What was your favorite musician or dancer? What did you like best about that person’s performance?
What was different about the performers’ interpretation of the Danse Macabre than the interpretation you made up with Ms. Gabel in music class?

We are thrilled to be able to bring performing arts to our school. Thank you to all who contribute to the PTA to help make this possible. Between in-class enrichments, assemblies, author visits, and more, we spend $360 per child at PS 154. Please consider donating to our annual fund at:

Family Movie Night: Friday, November 6th!

PS 154 movie night web image

What do you get when you combine nuns, mobsters, and soul music? A hilarious movie night at 154! When a lively lounge singer witnesses a crime, she is relocated for her protection. Set up in the guise of a nun in a convent, her behavior has her upending the peaceful lives of the quiet resident sisters who live there. To keep her out of trouble, she is assigned to work with the choir, where she quickly goes to work in bringing excitment to what had become boring and routine. Rambunctious and soulful music soon turns them into what they were always meant to be! As they become a success, they begin to get the stardom and fame this former lounge singer has always wished for (the exact kind she doesn’t need in a witness protection program!). Come join us Friday night for laughs, food and fun!

Concessions begin at 6 pm, and the movie starts at 6:30 pm.

Suggested donation of $1 per admission. Not a DOE Sponsored Event.

2nd Grade Parents–
Capoeira Enrichment Has Begun!

Our second grade students started their Capoeira enrichment this past Monday. This program is 100% PTA funded by donations from our PS 154 families. In 17 weekly classes, our beloved Mestre Foca, who is the founder of Capoeira Brooklyn, will introduce our students to this Brazilian performance art that combines martial arts, collaborative dance, and music.

Our capoeira program:
• develops discipline, focus, respect, and self-confidence
• builds balance, strength, flexibility, and athleticism
• introduces Brazilian language, music, and culture

Capoeira brings a wonderful sense of fun into our second-graders’week. Rather than perform or “work on” capoeira, they JOGA capoeira, or PLAY capoeira! This week, play a snippet of one of Mestre Foca’s compositions to familiarize yourself with the unique sound of capoeira music. Tracks 6 & 7 are kids’ favorites. Ask your child to show what she or he learned!

To provide capoeira and other enrichments to every classroom, the PTA spends $360/student each year. To help these wonderful programs continue, please donate at: Thanks for your support!

The Annual Boo Bash is Saturday, October 17th!

boo bash jpgIf you haven’t heard, Boo Bash will be taking place on Saturday October 17th from 5-8pm. This is an awesome event that is highly attended and super fun for the kids. This year, we will have a dance party (with glow sticks and LED goodies for sale), crafts, lots of food, a witches den, face painting, cotton candy, and more. This craziness can only be pulled off if we have help from all of our amazing PS 154 families! We have a variety of ways that you can help–from volunteering to decorating the school to working the ticket sales table to making cotton candy and donating boo-tiful baked goods that we can sell. Please sign up for a shift through this link:

If you are coming for set up and have to bring well-behaved kids, that’s totally fine. We will take all the help we can get! And we staggered the event shifts so that you can still take your kids around Boo Bash.

Music with Mrs. Gabel!

music classMusic classes at PS 154 are starting this week. Our PS 154 Music Program is 100% PTA funded. Our fantastic Mrs. Christine Gabel combines her vast experience as a musician with a Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Education to bring our children a complete K-5 music education experience.

Grades K-2 will focus on the basic foundation of music through singing, rhythm, and movement. Upper grades will delve deeper in their music experience by learning recorder (3rd) and Ukulele (4th, 5th). Upper grades students will also continue to improve their tonal and rhythm skills with singing in parts as a chorus, and movement activities. Mrs. Gabel uses traditional, folk, pop, and musical theatre songs to make music learning fun and engaging.

This week, ask your child to share a song or musical skill he or she learned. To provide Music with Mrs. Gabel and other enrichments to our every classroom, the PTA spends $360/student each year. To help these wonderful programs continue, please donate at:
